A WARRIORS THREE-PEAT

By on February 16, 2012

The New Zealand Warriors will make it three consecutive Toyota Cup titles says online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au, who’ve installed the Kiwi side as the $3.50 favourite. Their biggest threat comes from the Melbourne Storm, who’ve been priced at $6.50 with the North Queensland Cowboys and Sydney Roosters sharing the third line of betting at $9.00.

The Wests Tigers and Newcastle Knights are next at $13 followed by the Cronulla Sharks and Brisbane Broncos (both $15), Canterbury Bulldogs ($17) and Canberra Raiders ($19). “The Warriors are once again the team to beat. Their line-up is just as strong as the past few seasons and when you throw in their physical attributes and flair, there’s a lot to like about them. They’ll take some beating.” sportsbet.com.au’s Ben Hawes said.

2012 isn’t looking good for both the Manly Sea Eagles and Gold Coast Titans, who are the biggest outsiders in the market at $51.

The appointment of rookie coach Anthony Griffin hasn’t deterred punters from launching an early premiership plunge on Brisbane over the weekend which included one bet to win $100,000.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said the Broncos had been unusually easy in pre-season markets but punters stepped in after they’d reached attractive odds.

“After money for a number of other sides, the Broncos got out to $26 but punters clearly thought that was too big and have backed them back into $17,“ Sullivan said.
“It is the biggest price I can remember the Broncos being pre-season after they missed the eight last year but punters clearly think they’ll  improve in 2011.
“We have actually seen more money for them since Griffin replaced Ivan Henjak as coach.

“The Broncos quote will trim up very quickly if they start the season well too as they are always a popular side with punters who are quick to follow them when they get on a winning run.”

The Broncos  drifted slightly from $1.45 to $1.48 for their opening round NRL clash with the Cowboys on Friday night following reports star centre Justin Hodges will miss the game with a minor leg injury.
“The Broncos will still be short priced favourites and I think they will be heavily backed despite the fact Hodges is a major loss for them,” Sullivan said.

Strong Night For Qld Teams

By on April 18, 2009

In the two games of rugby league played last night it was the clubs from north of the border that asserted themselves in strong showings over quality opposition to move to the top of the NRL ladder.

Brisbane vs Penrith

At the start of the season their was conflicting arguments about how the Broncos would perform with the loss of their long time mentor Wayne Bennett. Many insisted there would be a slump, others stated that there is too much quality in the team for this to be the case.

Their loss to Bennett’s Dragons further fuelled this debate, but so far that has been their only loss this season and their victory over Penrith last night, while far from convincing, was enough to show they will be contenders this year.

Early on they showed their attacking flair as they jumped out to a 24-6 lead at the end of the first half and looked for all money like they would rack up a big win.

Penrith had other plans and hit back hard in the second half to score two tries and claw their way to within 6 points of a suddenly fragile Broncos outfit. While Brisbane managed to regain their composure and finish with two late tries to claim victory 38-18, there were worrying signs that will need to be addressed.

Closing out teams in the second half would be the chief among these, and coach Ivan Henjak admitted as much himself after the match.

“It’s always a concern when you let teams back in” Henjak said “We know what’s going wrong, we just need to find a solution to it, I thought we addressed (the problem), but we haven’t fixed it yet obviously”

The Broncos will be hoping to have this sorted before the rep season begins, where the loss of manpower has traditionally hit them harder than any other team in the competition.

Gold Coast vs Canberra

The second game of the night saw the Titans and the Raiders involved in a keenly fought match with the Titans only managing to break the deadlock minutes before the final whistle with a try that saw them win 16-10.

The standout performer of the night was Titans halfback Scott Prince whose form has been improving exponentially, and last nights game was probably enough to see him installed as favourite to wear the number seven jumper in the upcoming test match against the World Champion Kiwi’s.

It is interesting to look at what the Titans have achieved so far this season and the players they have that are fuelling this success. Old hands like Preston Campbell, Luke Bailey and Mat Rogers are showing great form as is Chris Walker, the former magnet for trouble who is showing a much more level head on the field.

These players along with Scott Prince and Nathan Friend are leading the way for their younger, less experienced team mates and they are currently seeing the fruits of that with their position at the top of the table.

What is even more impressive about their start to the 2009 season is the quality of their opposition in the first 6 rounds which has included wins over the Knights, Bulldogs and Storm as well as a narrow loss away to the Dragons.

Far from having a lucky start to their season, the Titans are looking more and more every game like a club that will be right there in September fighting it out for a Grand Final berth. Their odds are shortening to take the title and are currently at around $12.50.

Having assessed the chances of Wayne Bennet’s new team in a previous post, I’ll now turn to the squad he has left behind after being at the helm for the last 532 games, The Brisbane Broncos.

Old Man Bennett…Gone

The first thing that springs to mind is there has to be some hangover from the departure of such a long serving coach. The club has known no other leader since it entered the competition 21 years ago, and the indelible mark he has left at the club is not something that can be replaced overnight.

Add to this the fact that along with Bennett, 13 of last years players have left the club and you are looking at a squad that barely resembles the 2008 version.

But if there is any club with the talent to overcome such a challenge it is the Broncos. Much to the disgust of their southern rivals, the Broncos have been the most consistent performers  in the NRL since they entered the competition, having missed the finals just three times in two decades.

For years New South Welshmen have begrudged the pool of players that Brisbane has had to choose from and this is proven by one look at the player changes to the roster – only 4 new players were signed to replace the 13 that left, meaning the club was confident enough that the current juniors and reserves can step up and fill any gaps where required.

Strength In The Backline

One of the four signings for this year was young superstar Israel Folau, and his combination with Justin Hodges in the centres is sure to cause much concern to opposing players. Add other class backs Lockyer, Karmichael Hunt and Peter Wallace and you have a team with plenty of attacking options.

It is in the forwards that opponents may find weak spots to exploit. The loss of Tonie Carroll has not received a huge amount of attention, but I think Brisbane fans will realise early on in the season how important he has been to this team over the last few years.

It will be left to Sam Thaiday to lift the forwards around him, and help fast track the development of some of the young big men who will be given opportunities at various stages throughout the year.

Much will depend on injuries for the Broncos this year – on paper they don’t not seem to have the depth needed to cover key positions if a plague of injuries occurs. Having said that the team from Brisbane is renowned for turning up talent at an alarming rate and I’m sure by the end of this year there will be at least one player from the squad who started the season as an unknown and finished as a household name.

The Broncos finished just outside the top 4 last year, and will be doing well to finish any higher than 2008. Somewhere just inside the top 8 is the most likely result.
