barry boxingBarry Hall has always said that he would consider a boxing career after football. Now that he has retired from the AFL he may be getting in the ring sooner rather than later.

Big dollars have been waved into Barry’s face to don on the gloves in what would be a boxing promoters dream.

He has had talks with champion boxer and promoter Danny Green which could see him moving to Perth to join the Green team in a boxing career. Green has said that he wants to be Hall’s promoter and that Barry could earn $1 million just for signing with him as a professional boxer.

Green has had numerous sparing sessions with Hall in the past and said that he can take a punch and has great movement around the ring.

Australia’s leading boxing agent Angelo Hyder has been quoted saying that Hall has the potential to fight all over the world and could make up to $10 million per fight. A fair pay rise from the $600,000 per season he was getting at the Swans. Angelo believes that Hall would get a shot at a world title.

There is speculation that a ex NRL footballer now pro boxer John Hopoate could be Barry’s first fight in what would be a massive event for Australian boxing. The AFL v NRL rivalry would draw a massive crowd and millions of people to watch the fight on Pay Per View where the big money is. It would be one of the most anticipated fights in Australian boxing history. Hopoate has made the transition into boxing very well with 11 wins from just 14 fights.

Barry Hall was a amateur boxing state champion as a schoolboy and started boxing when he was 14 before quitting to pursue his AFL career.

Mayweather Vs Marquez

By on June 3, 2009

Motor mouth Floyd Mayweather Jr is coming out of retirement for a second time to prove that he, and not Manny Pacquiao, is the greatest boxer in the world. The desicion came after talk amongst fans and experts said that Mayweather would struggle against  Pacquiao. A claim that has gathered support after Pacquiao destroyed Engishman Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton inside two rounds.

Mayweather has stated that he wants to go down in history as the greatest boxer of all time and to do that you have to beat the best. To give the guy credit he has never once ducked a challange. This is because he realises that a boxer is only judged by the great fighters that he has fought, and that his unbeaten record means nothing unless he has some big name scalps to back it up. He has already come out of retirement to fight Hatton, who was unbeaten at the time, and gave him a serious boxing lesson. He will now come out of retirement for the second time to take up the challenge of the hard hitting Pacquiao.

But First Mayweather must get past tough Mexican Jaun Manuel Marquez on July 17th in Vagas. Marquez has a wealth of experience with a record of 50 wins 4 defeats and 1 draw, with the draw coming against Manny Pacquiao in 2004.  He did lose the rematch, but Pacquiao knew he had been in a fight and only won  by a split decision in Las Vegas early last year. Marquez is a typical South American fighter technically sound, can take a punch and never gives up. It is a dangerous combination, but is it enough to beat the classy shoman style of Mayweather.

While there is no denying that  Marquez has ability, there are questions against his age and size, or lack of it. Marquez has stepped up in weight twice since he started his career in 1993 and will be doing so again to fight Mayeather. While this may not sound like such a big deal if you take in to account that Marquez is already 35 and will turn 36 just a month later, and that he has fought 55 fights with many of them being total battle royals, you have to wonder how his body will react to the extra weight. “Too much weight sinks ships” as they say, but this is never more true than when the ship is coming toward the end of its useful life.

And this is exactly how I feel about this fight. At 32 Mayweather could still be considered to be at his peak. He is naturally bigger and has an armoury of skills that I feel can be compared to the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson and Roy Jones Jr, meaning that he will have that little bit too much class on the night.
