Caulfield will come to life with the $100,000 Sir John Monash Stakes on Saturday. It should be an exciting race with a handy field of winter sprinters lined up in the race.
“I Am Invincible ($3.70) will set a keen pace up front and, from his gun draw, Gran Sasso ($3.10) will be right on his hammer,” said Read. “Besides the perfect run, his current form and fitness easily sets the benchmark for this race.” Read more of this article »
Barry Hall has always said that he would consider a boxing career after football. Now that he has retired from the AFL he may be getting in the ring sooner rather than later.
Big dollars have been waved into Barry’s face to don on the gloves in what would be a boxing promoters dream.
He has had talks with champion boxer and promoter Danny Green which could see him moving to Perth to join the Green team in a boxing career. Green has said that he wants to be Hall’s promoter and that Barry could earn $1 million just for signing with him as a professional boxer. Read more of this article »
With the $10 million upgrades finishing on schedule the Toowoomba Turf Club will be presenting their amazing new cushion track with an action packed program under lights this Saturday.
IASbet’s bookmaker Mark Read identifies the inaugural $150,000 2009 Weetwood Handicap as the pick of the card, stating that the field is arguably one of the best assembled in Queensland this year.
“The pace will be strong from the outset as Wasted Emotions ($3.80) will be pressured at the front by Danzylum ($16.00) and Vocalic ($34.00),” said Read.
“My tip, and I feel strongly about this one, is Voice Commander ($4.80) ridden by the inform Tye Angland. The gelding has been racing very well lately without race patterns and conditions suiting him. He trains on a similar surface in Canberra, and, all factors considered, this event looks to be the ideal race for him.” Read more of this article »
World number 3 Andy Murray has laughed off claims that he is a cheat and that he lack the bottle to win Wimbledon. Murray’s second round opponent Latvian, Ernests Gulbis, accused Murray of faining an injury at last years Queens Club tournament to try and break the Latvians rhythm. ‘In the third set he took a medical time-out when it was 4-4,’ the fact that Murray pulled out of the tournament the very next day doesn’t seem to bother Gulbis and he is convinced that he was duped. ‘Actually he didn’t have nothing, he just broke my rhythm and I wasn’t an experienced enough player to deal with that at the time.’
Murray answered him back by beating giving Gulbis a bit of a tennis lesson winning their second round tie in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. Murray is in great form and goes in to his round three tie against little known Serbian Viktor Troicki expecting an easy win. Despite Murray’s good form most people aren’t looking past Federer to take out his 15th open title especially with Rafael Nadal’s absence (Which the sportsbetblog team predicted weeks before it happened), but we must remember that Murray has beaten Federer six times out of eight and looks to have the measure of him. And as for the question marks over his stamina and his bottle, well we will have to wait and see. My bet is looking good though so go to sportsbet now to back Murray at $3.75.
One of the great stories of this years Wimbledon has been the apparent return to form of our very own Lleyton Hewitt. Hewitt loves the grass courts of Wimbledon and it looks as though he has chosen the 2009 tournament to play some of his best tennis in years. He brushed aside USA’s Robby Ginepri in round one and also destroyed fifth seed Jaun Martin Del Potro 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in round two. Hewitt is now hot favourite in his third round tie against Philipp Petzschner, but the bookies still don’t see him having much of a chance at lifting his 2nd Wimbledon title. Sportsbet are paying out $21.00 so if you are feeling patriotic why not have a punt. Read more of this article »
Forget Wimbledon and The Ashes, the 2009 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is coming up on July 4 and this year it will be more fierce than ever!
The contest was started way back on July 4th 1916 on Coney Island in New York. Four immigrants had a hot dog eating contest to see who was the most patriotic, ten minuets later Neer Sehgal had eaten thirteen hot dogs and was crowned the victor. I bet they didn’t realise what they had just started!
The contest has been held just about every year since and 92 years on in 2008 Joey Chestnut was awarded the mustard belt for winning the annual event. He downed a massive 59 hot dogs in 10 minuets! The contest went into overtime when long time rival Takeru Kobayashi from Japan equaled his effort of 59 and a 5 hot dog eat off was announced. The first one to finish their plate won the contest. Chestnut finished his plate in 50 seconds, seven seconds before Kobayashi. Checkout the video below Read more of this article »
The 2008 Wimbledon final between the Swiss master Roger Federer and Spanish star Rafael Nadal was considered by many as the greatest game of tennis ever played. A five set thriller that saw the the powerful Spaniard knock Federer off the top of world tennis and start a new era in the mens game. But the hope for a 2009 rematch under the new retractable roof on center court has been dealt a blow, with Rafael Nadal reportedly under going intensive treatment on a knee injury that could threaten his defense of the title. Roger Federer will go in to the tournament has hot favourite after winning the French Open for the first time, and if Nadal does miss out it will be hard to look past Federer breaking the Pete Samprass record by winning his 15th open title. So is there anyone out there who can stop the Fed Express in its tracks.
Andy Murray was my pick for the French Open but once again his stamina let him down and he was dumped out in the second week by Fernando Gonzalez. Murray is ranked at number 3 in the world after he won at the Queens club tournament last week, which was his third title of the year. He is widely considered to be the most likely to break the top twos strangle hold on mens tennis, but that is only if he can take his form in to the second week at the major tournaments. Fred Perry was the last Brit to win Wimbledon, with this the year of his 100th birthday and Nadal’s injury maybe, just maybe the omens are on Andy’s side. He is my pick again so go to Canbet now to get your free bet on Murray making history. Read more of this article »
The World Wide recession has hit us all hard. Since last year there have been thousands of job losses, house repossessions and families going hungry. Share prices are at record lows as the boom time of the late 90s and early 21st century has well and truly come to an end. But then again try telling that to the sporting world. Despite the rest of us pinching pennies and living on beans on toast the money that is being splashed around on players, wages and sponsorships could finance most third world countries.
UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) President, Michel Platini, has slammed the recent excess in soccer labeling Spanish giants Real Madrid and English Premier League clubs a disgrace for throwing astronomical amounts of money around on players wages and transfer fees. This came after Madrid spent $117 million to secure the services of Brazilian superstar Kaka and then a world record $163 million for Manchester Utd winger Ronaldo just a week later. Add to that that they have both signed long term deals reported be worth alomst $17 millon a year you have to wonder where all this money is coming from. French great Platini feels that it is just not fair “These transfers are a serious challenge to the idea of fair play and the concept of financial balance in our competitions,” he said. Platini is also worried that unless a cap or a fairer transfer system is put in place that a lot of the clubs will go bust because they are over capitalising just to compete.
But Soccer clubs are by no means the only culprits. In American Baseball, Basketball and NFL there is no such thing as a transfer fee as there is in soccer, so all the money goes directly in to the players paypacket. Madona’s toy boy and New York Yankee star Alex Rodriguez is reportedly earning $42 million a year and Pittsburg Steelers quarterback Ben Roethilsberger is earning just shy of that at $41 million a year, while Australian basketballer Andrew Bogut scrapes by on just $13.8 million. There have been hundreds of world class Australian sporting feats over the last century. Here are my top five Australian sporting moments complete with video clips.
John Aloisi’s Penalty Kick
No World Cup appearances for the Socceroos for 32 years and John Aloisi changed it all with massive penalty kick in 2005 against the classy Uruguayan team. They qualified for the World Cup that night in front of a packed house at Sydney’s ANZ stadium and what a game it was! Listen to Craig Foster loose it!
Shane Warne’s Ball of the Century
This was Shane Warne’s first ball in Test cricket in England and one he will always be remembered for. The game was the 1993 Ashes First Test at Old Trafford. Gatting had no idea what happened as the ball curved around him. He then asks umpire Kenny Palmer on his way out and received a little nod. Read more of this article »

The 27th of May sees Anthony Mundine step back in to the ring against IBO Middle Weight champion Daniel Geale, with many people predicting that this bout could finally be Mundine’s undoing.
Although Mundine has won all three of his fights since stepping down to Middle Weight his performances have lacked the spark and killer instinct that he showed earlier in his career. There is no doubt that he still has the skills, but the question is does the 33 year old still have the hunger?
Mundine is still boasting that he his the best in the business and that he will one day rule the world, but right now he really needs to prove it. Mundine has failed to get the big names to come down under and has failed to get the challenges that motivate him and bring out his lethal best. Read more of this article »
