ronaldoThe World Wide recession has hit us all hard. Since last year there have been thousands of  job losses, house repossessions and families going hungry. Share prices are at record lows as the boom time of the late 90s and early 21st century has well and truly come to an end. But then again try telling that to the sporting world. Despite the rest of us pinching pennies and living on beans on toast the money that is being splashed around on players, wages and sponsorships could finance most third world countries.

UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) President, Michel Platini, has slammed the recent excess in soccer labeling Spanish giants Real Madrid and English Premier League clubs a disgrace for throwing astronomical amounts of money around on players wages and transfer fees. This came after Madrid spent $117 million to secure the services of Brazilian superstar Kaka and then a world record $163 million for Manchester Utd winger Ronaldo just a week later. Add to that that they have both signed long term deals reported be worth alomst $17 millon a year you have to wonder where all this money is coming from. French great Platini feels that it is just not fair “These transfers are a serious challenge to the idea of fair play and the concept of financial balance in our competitions,” he said. Platini is also worried that unless a cap or a fairer transfer system is put in place that a lot of the clubs will go bust because they are over capitalising just to compete.

But Soccer clubs are by no means the only culprits. In American Baseball, Basketball and NFL there is no such thing as a transfer fee as there is in soccer, so all the money goes directly in to the players paypacket.  Madona’s toy boy and New York Yankee star Alex Rodriguez is reportedly earning $42 million a year and Pittsburg Steelers quarterback Ben Roethilsberger is earning just shy of that at $41 million a year, while Australian basketballer Andrew Bogut scrapes by on just $13.8 million.

All of the sporting codes will argue that in these tough times people are heading  to the sporting arena to see their heroes in action just to escape their reality. And that these heroes need paying for delighting their fans and putting their bodies on the line week in week out. The only problem that I see with that is  most of the money that fills their pockets comes from the rip off ticket prices and expensive meat pies and watered down beer that the FANS have to fork out for week in and week out. This hardly seems fair to me.

If you think that Real Madrids spending spree will bring them success goto sportsbet and recieve your free $50 bet on them to win next years Champions League.

Sports Alive Review

By on June 11, 2009

Internet betting is becoming massive business all around the world thanks mainly to their free bet sign ups and  generous odds on almost every sporting event that you can think of. With Sportsalive.com fast becoming known as the premium sports betting site. Although they do offer bets on all kinds of horse racing there are some restrictions. Bets of $2000 are the max for Metropolitan racing , while limits of $1,000 and $500 for are in place for Provincial and Country racing. This makes Sportsalive a good place to bet on the ponies on a whim, but not so great if you are a serious horse punter.

Sports alive was born after the amalgamation of Sports Acumen and Global Sportsbet business with idea of offering punters a wide range of sports betting opportunities. The site itself is packed with news, reviews and tips, and in 2009  Paul “Fatty” Vautin and Robert Walls signed up to give their weekly thoughts on the NRL and AFL.

But the one thing that Sportsalive have monopolised here in Australia and New Zealand is spread betting.

Sports Alive & Spread Betting

Spread Betting has become very popular in the UK because it offers an exciting betting option that can deliver you greater rewards while keeping you involved for every second of every sporting occasion. Sportsalive is Australia’s leading spread betting agency, offering a comprehensive range of markets on the most popular sports and racing events.

Spread Betting allows you to back your judgement and your pick doesn’t have to win for you to win on the bet. If you think that a player or team will do better (or worse) than the Sportsalive quote, then the more accurate your prediction the more you will win.

For example if Sportsalive predict that there will between 30 or40 goals in an AFL match then this is the spread 30 -40. The punter has two options to buy or sell against the spread. If you buy you are betting that there will be more than 40 goals in the game. If you sell you are betting that there will be less than 30.

Special Offers

Apart from special offers to previous Sports Acumen and Global Sportsbet business clients Sportsalive are offering up to $125 if you refer a friend to their site. This will include $25 paid directly in to your betting account while your friend will recieve the same as their first deposit up to $100. So if they deposit $100 in to their acount when they first sign up Sportsalive will match it.

Go to Sportsalive now for early betting on Wimbledon. My hot tip is Rafael Nadal with Sportsalive paying $5.00 for the Spaniard to instantly get over his French Open nightmare. But if my prediction of Andy Murray winning at Roland Garros is anything to go by you are probably best off ignoring me and betting on the Australian elections instead. Sportsalive are offering $2.50 for the Coalition to bounce back from last times embarrasment.

This weekends round twelve is a split round with five games this weekend and the remaining three next weekend. See the tips of the last three games here

The game of the round is Collingwood V Sydney at the MCG with Sportsbet unsure on who will win with Sydney just coming in favourite at $1.82. Signup with Sportsbet today for an instant $50 free bet.

As the teams will not be finalised for next weekends games, a detailed and final tips will not be made on the final three games until we have a better idea on the ins and outs. This makes the predictions easier to make. Check back here next week or follow us on Twitter to get tips instantly every week.

Carlton V St Kilda, Friday Night at Etihad Stadium
Tip: St Kilda

The Saints have continued their unbeaten run and rewriting the clubs history books with a record eleven straight wins. They play a clean game and look very hard to beat. The Saints ruck division has once again taken a tumble with Steven King rubbed out for four matches after a off the ball bump last weekend, but they do pick up inform ruckman Gardener this weekend after one week on the side lines. Saints by 24 points.

Western Bulldogs V Port Adelaide, Saturday in Darwin
Tip: Western Bulldogs

The Doggies looked shaky in the first half last weekend against the Tigers but come good after the main break showing their usual brilliance. They are a true top four team and should easily overcome Port this weekend. Aker will be Ports biggest headache as he continues to play like a born again player and is moving very well.

Richmond V West Coast, Saturday Night at Etihad Stadium
Tip: Richmond

This game could go either way with both teams showing poor form during the first half of the year.  The tigers do look the better team on paper but seem to be having trouble with game plans with a lot of  basic errors in the midfield. I think they can get a win on the board for the new coach but it wont be an easy task. The Tigers by 18 points

Hawthorn V Brisbane Lions Sunday at Aurora Stadium
Tip: Hawthorn

A Gutsy Hawks team out lasted Sydney last week with a great comeback effort from Hodge who will be the key to Hawthorn winning this weekend in Tasmania. Rioli looks like to miss this weekend with a hamstring injury but the Hawks have plenty of depth and should have a comfortable win.

Adelaide V North Melbourne, Sunday at AAMI Stadium
Tip: Adelaide

The Crows have had two great wins in the last two weeks beating the Hawks and the Bombers in Melbourne. On the other hand the Kangaroos have had a disappointing start to the season with only four wins and a low percentage. They will struggle against a strong Crows team who are are looking to break into the top eight and depending on the winning margin may finish in the top four after this round.

Split Round Express Footy Tipping
Check here for a detailed and final tips on remaining games.
Essendon V Melbourne, Friday Night at Etihad Stadium
Tip: Essendon

Sydney V Collingwood, Saturday at ANZ Stadium
Tip: Sydney

Fremantle V Geelong, Sunday at Suibiaco Oval
Tip: Geelong

Liverpool FC Going Broke

By on June 9, 2009

As a Liverpool fan I was very excited to read about the plans of coach Rael Benitez for next season. Players like Carlos Tevez, David Silva and Glenn Johnson have all been talked about to build on their best ever Premier League performance last season. Liverpool finished 4 points behind Champions Manchester Utd and only have two disappointing 0-0 draws with Hull to blame for not taking out their first title in 18 years.

But with the recent news that the American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillet are looking to re finance their own debts back in to Liverpool that will plunge the iconic club $500 million in to the red has left me and thousands of fans all around the world absoloutely devistated.

There has been alot of interest from Dubai International to buy the reds, but Hicks and Gillet are determined to push forward with their re financing plan that could see Liverpool having to come up with annual interest payments of around $60 million.

The plan will not only put a dent in the clubs plans to build on this years success, but may even mean an exodus of players as the clubs financiers look to balance the books, with Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres being top of the list to go. The situation could end up being similar that of Leeds Utd where debts forced them to sell off players and even saw them drop out of the Premier League, the club is still recovering.

The two owners say that the club is not for sale at any price and that they have the clubs best interests at heart. But ever since they took over, Liverpool has been run more like a circus show than a successful soccer team and has become the laughing stock of English football, with Gillet and Hicks being compaired with former Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis and current Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has the most hated men in football.

They have used Liverpool as means to clear their own personal debts and if they have any heart or any respect for the people who spend $100 every week to watch the team they love they will sell up and let Liverpool get on with re building.

Liverpool are now at $3.75 to win the Premiership title in 2010 but expect those odds to lengthen if the sales to balance debts go ahead. Get your free bet at sportsbet.com.au

Twenty20 World Cup Shocks

By on June 7, 2009

The Twenty20 World cup is only a few days old and already we have seen some fantastic matches and some stunning upsets.

First New Zealand survived a scare in a shortened 7 over match against Scotland and then Australia got off to a terrible start losing to the West Indies by seven wickets. The Australians were put on the backfoot in the first over when Jerome Taylor took the wickets of all rounder Shane Watson and Captain Ricky Ponting. The Australians struggled to get up any sort of momentum after that and they laboured to a pretty measly total of 169 on what was a good batting pitch. It could have been much worse though if David Warner (who is a total superstar in the making) hadn’t come in and hit his 63 runs, the Australians total was also helped along by some terrible out fielding from the West Indies. But when they came in to bat there were no such mistakes, and a fantastic laid back 88 from Captain Chris Gayle helped the West Indies wrap this game up in just 16 overs. While this will put the Australians under lots of pressure to win their next match you can never right them off. Warner has already showed that he is in good touch and if the likes of Ponting, Wastson and Mitchell Johnson can all start to fire then they can certainly still win the tournament, and with bookies now paying out $9.00 for them to do so they are certainly worth a punt. Go to sportsalive.com and sign up to recieve your free bet.

By far the biggest upset of the tournament and maybe of all time was Englands 4 wicket defeat against Holland. England went in to the match with out Kevin Pietersen, who is still resting an achilles injury, and Andrew Flintoff but they seemed not to miss them and were crusing when they lost their first wicket in the 12th over with a score of 102. A mini collapse followed and England finished on 162 thanks mainly to a fantastic 71 runs from 49 balls by Luke Wright. The total still looked beyond Holland, but thanks to a 49 off 30 balls by Tom de Grooth and mistakes by Stuart Broad and wicket keeper James Foster they found themselves going in to the last over needing just 7 runs for victory. A run a ball and an over throw by Broad on the last ball of the innings was enough for Holland to seal an amazing victory. England may have one eye on the up coming Ashes series but there really is no excuses for such a loss. England are paying $16.00 to go on and win the tournament at sportsalive.com, but with Pakistan up next for the Poms I really wouldn’t waste my money.

At sportsalive.com they are also offering great odds on individual matches, as well as top run scorers and who will hit the most sixes. Get your money on David Warner to score the most tournament runs for Australia.

THE ASHES ARE COMING. The England and Australia test series is the most well known and most anticipated test series in the world. And this year will be no different as England look for revenge after their 5-0 series embarrasment in Australia.

The Ashes series dates back to 1882 when Australia beat England on English soil for the first time and the English press printed a satirical obituary that read “ English cricket has died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.” And the English have been struggling to regain them ever since.

The two sides have had some epic encounters over the years and this years series is alreading shaping up to be a massive battle between two sides that are both trying to re build.

Australia have had a lot of their key players retire in recent years. The likes of Gilchrist and Hayden will certainly be missed, but it is the blond locks of Shane Warne that they will notice missing the most. The textpert finger spinner has had the best of the English batsmen for years, from the miracle ball that bowled Mike Gatting to his forty wicket hall in the last Ashes series where he left Kevin Pieterson in a tangled mess on the floor. It is true that Australia will never find a carbon copy replacement for Warnie. Players of that calibre only come around once in a generation, but I feel that so far they haven’t even found a spinner that would be worthy of spit shinning Shane’s protective box. This means that they will be relying mainly a pace attack that includes a half fit Brett Lee and out of form Stuart Clark.

England on the other hand have been having all sorts of in house problems. Kevin Pieterson spat his dummy out and resigned the captaincy after a disagreement with the then coach Peter Moores who was later sacked. They have bounced back somewhat from a disasterous tour of the West Indies, beating them 2-0 in the return series in England, but there are some injury clouds hanging over the squad that could be their downfall. Micheal Vaughn will probably not be picked, while pace bowler Simon Jones who terrorised Australia on their last visit to English shores is still battling long term injury. But it is the question marks surrounding Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff that have got the Barmy Army more worried. Pieterson is adament he will be fully fit for the Ashes series after he pulled out of the one day series with the West Indies.

ECB chief medical officer Nick Peirce said “The Achilles injury flared up after the secnd Test and the best course of treatment is for Kevin to rest throughout the NatWest Series. “By giving him a precautionary period of time out to receive some concentrated treatment and rest we are enabling the niggle to settle down in preparation of the ICC World Twenty20 and the Ashes.”

Pietersen added:”I’m extremely disappointed to be missing the NatWest Series as I was looking forward to playing a significant part in what should be an exciting and closely-fought one-day series. The medical advice is to rest the achilles and although I’m frustrated to be leaving a happy and successful dressing room I’m absolutely confident this will help me overcome what has up until now been a minor ongoing injury.”

Andrew Flintoff is also a doubt and Australian Captain Ricky Ponting has already started the mind games by saying that “England would be taking a massive risk if they were to play Flintoff half fit.” But Flintof is expected to be in the starting line and lets face it if he could get to the crease in a wheel chair England would need him.

So who is going to win?

My money is well and truly on the Australians for this one. England rely to heavily on Flintoff and Pietersen to perform and will once again fall flat on their faces.

Mayweather Vs Marquez

By on June 3, 2009

Motor mouth Floyd Mayweather Jr is coming out of retirement for a second time to prove that he, and not Manny Pacquiao, is the greatest boxer in the world. The desicion came after talk amongst fans and experts said that Mayweather would struggle against  Pacquiao. A claim that has gathered support after Pacquiao destroyed Engishman Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton inside two rounds.

Mayweather has stated that he wants to go down in history as the greatest boxer of all time and to do that you have to beat the best. To give the guy credit he has never once ducked a challange. This is because he realises that a boxer is only judged by the great fighters that he has fought, and that his unbeaten record means nothing unless he has some big name scalps to back it up. He has already come out of retirement to fight Hatton, who was unbeaten at the time, and gave him a serious boxing lesson. He will now come out of retirement for the second time to take up the challenge of the hard hitting Pacquiao.

But First Mayweather must get past tough Mexican Jaun Manuel Marquez on July 17th in Vagas. Marquez has a wealth of experience with a record of 50 wins 4 defeats and 1 draw, with the draw coming against Manny Pacquiao in 2004.  He did lose the rematch, but Pacquiao knew he had been in a fight and only won  by a split decision in Las Vegas early last year. Marquez is a typical South American fighter technically sound, can take a punch and never gives up. It is a dangerous combination, but is it enough to beat the classy shoman style of Mayweather.

While there is no denying that  Marquez has ability, there are questions against his age and size, or lack of it. Marquez has stepped up in weight twice since he started his career in 1993 and will be doing so again to fight Mayeather. While this may not sound like such a big deal if you take in to account that Marquez is already 35 and will turn 36 just a month later, and that he has fought 55 fights with many of them being total battle royals, you have to wonder how his body will react to the extra weight. “Too much weight sinks ships” as they say, but this is never more true than when the ship is coming toward the end of its useful life.

And this is exactly how I feel about this fight. At 32 Mayweather could still be considered to be at his peak. He is naturally bigger and has an armoury of skills that I feel can be compared to the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson and Roy Jones Jr, meaning that he will have that little bit too much class on the night. If you sign up today at sportsbet.com.au you can get a free bet on the fight.

There have been hundreds of world class Australian sporting feats over the last century. Here are my top five Australian sporting moments complete with video clips.

John Aloisi’s Penalty Kick

No World Cup appearances for the Socceroos for 32 years and John Aloisi changed it all with  massive penalty kick in 2005 against the classy Uruguayan team. They qualified for the World Cup that night in front of a packed house at Sydney’s ANZ stadium and what a game it was! Listen to Craig Foster loose it!

Shane Warne’s Ball of the Century
This was Shane Warne’s first ball in Test cricket in England and one he will always be remembered for. The game was the 1993 Ashes First Test at Old Trafford. Gatting had no idea what happened as the ball curved around him. He then asks umpire Kenny Palmer on his way out and received a little nod.

Leo Barry’s Grand Final Mark
Sydney Swans Leaping Leo Barry could well have rewritten history when he took this game saving mark deep in his defensive 50 with only seconds to go. Sydney were four points up when Dean Cox kicked long in one last ditched effort for the Eagles to win the 2005 AFL Grand Final. The ball went to a large pack of players where Leo Barry took a massive contested mark giving the Sydney the game and the Flag for that year.

Makybe Diva’s third straight Melbourne Cup
What seem to me to be an impossible task seemed easy in the end for Makybe Diva, winning three Melbourne Cups in succession. Makybe Diva was the clear winner over second place Xcellent and third On a Jeune. Listen to the classic line “A champion becomes a legend” from commentator Greg Miles.

Alex Jesaulenko’s Mark
It was the 1970 VFL Grand Final between Carlton and Collingwood at the MCG. The short but sweet cry of “Jesaulenko you beauty” was heard from commentator Mike Williamson after Jesaulenko took the most famous mark ever taken.

French Open 2009 Update

By on June 1, 2009

The French Open will head in to its second week without defending champion Rafael Nadal after he was dumped out of the competition by 23rd seed Robin Soderling. The three sets to one defeat was the world number ones first ever loss at Roland Garros and easily one of the biggest upsets in tennis history. Nadal’s shock exit also leaves the tournament wide open with a number of contenders looking to take his French Open crown that he has owned for the past four years. Here at sportsbetblog.com.au we will be looking at the most likely winners  for you to place your free bet on  from Sportingbet

Roger Federer $2.10

Roger Federer is now the hot favourite to win his 14th Grand Slam title and understandably so. The Swiss master has looked good so far and with his arch nemesis eliminated as well as dangerous Serb Novak Djokovic it would take a brave man to bet against him.

Andy Murray $4.50

Ther is no doubt that Roger Federer’s air of invincibility has gone in recent years thanks mainlyRafael Nadal’s dominance of  him, proving that Federer is human and therefore beatable. Andy Murray is one of those players that has seized on this confidence and beaten Federer on regualr occasions. Murray is one player with the skills that can break the strangle hold that the top two of Federer and Nadal seem to have on the game. His only down fall so far in his career has been a lack of stamina to play top tennis for two full weeks in a Grand Slam, but he has looked fantastic so far disposing of Mario Cilic, Janko Tipsarevic, Potito Starace and Juan Ignacio Chela in fine style. Get your free bet on the tough Brit, this is his year.

Andy Roddick $67.00

American number 6 seed Andy Roddick has travelled well in the first week. But then again he always does, it is the second week of Grand Slams when he faces up against much tougher opponents that he seems to fall flat on his face. He is definately a good bet to get through is fourth round tie against unpredictable Frenchmen Gael Monflis at $2.22, but I am afraid that winning the tournament is probably beyond him.

The Ladies

Maria Sharapova $26.00

Men all over the world are thanking the tennis gods because Maria Sharapova is back on the court and looking like she could cause an upset. She was un seeded for this years Frech Open after a lengthy spell out of the game through injury, and has been taken to three sets in each of her ties so far because of a tough draw. It would be a dream come back for her, but I would save your free bet from betfair for Dinara Safina at $2.26 you can still make a nice little profit.

Samantha Stosur $85.00

Seeded 30th Aussie Samantha Stosur upset 4th seed Elena Dementieva in the third round, and she did it pretty comfortably winning 6-3 4-6 6-1. We would all love a fellow Aussie to win , and at $85.00 Stosur could just be worth a couple of dollars.

AFL Round 11 Footy Tips

By on June 1, 2009

akermanisSee the 2011 Round 11 tips here

Round elevens tips are fairly straight forward. The only upset that I predict  happening this week is Sydney beating the Hawks at the MCG. The game of the week is Richmond Vs the Bulldogs on Friday night, both teams are coming off wins and Richmond coach Terry Wallace is looking to leave on a high note.

Want your tips delivered to you each week? Then follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our blog.
Sports Bet of the Round
This weeks bet of the round is Bulldogs, Essendon and Sydney in a multi bet. Sportsbet will give a $50 free bet on this weeks bet of the round just for signing up with them here.

Richmond V Western Bulldogs Friday Night at Etihad Stadium
Tip: Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are playing great footy with a nice forty point win over the Swans last week. Giansiracusa’s skill in the middle will be again game winning, he breaks the middle with ease which gives the forwards numerous uncontested possessions and goals. Ben Cousins has hit back well for the Tigers, returning from a fractured hand last week with twenty possessions in the second half. Can the Tigers do it for Terry Wallace in his last game as coach? I can’t see it happening.

North Melbourne V St Kilda Saturday at Etihad Stadium
Tip: St Kilda

I can’t go past the Saints. They are playing tough football at the moment that even when playing bad still looks good. Lenny Hayes has strung a three great games together in the past few weeks so expect another big one from him. Look out for Clinton Jones. He has stepped up his game in the middle this year making it much easier for the Saints senior play makers to move the ball forward cleanly.

Brisbane  V Carlton Saturday Night at the Gabba
Tip: Carlton

This should be a great game for the neutral supporter with both forward lines known for big marks and goals. Fevola is back in form after a six goal bag and numerous second efforts last weekend so expect another big effort from him. Marc Murphy will be the tell tale early on. If he gets a few early possessions you know the Blues are going to have a good game. Daniel Rich may be a handful for the Blues, his ball carry and tackling pressure has been second to none this year for Brisbane.

Port Adelaide V Fremantle, Saturday Night at AAMI Stadium
Tip: Port Adelaide

Once again Freo let us down with another loss in game they should have won last week, I will never learn… The Dockers suffered a few injuries during last weeks narrow loss to Richmond which will most likely carry over into this game. As long as Power can hold Arron Sandilands down Port shouldn’t have any problems beating Freo.

Essendon V Adelaide, Sunday at Etihad Stadium
Tip: Essendon

The Bombers need a win this week to lift their spirits after a big loss to Geelong. It will be a big test for Essendon to see if they are a true top eight team after Adelaide’s victory over last years premiers last week. Matthew Lloyd may need to play up the ground a little more to add some bulk to the Essendon midfield.

Hawthorn V Sydney, Sunday at the MCG
Tip: Sydney

I’m unsure about the Hawks this year. Obviously at the start of the year they were expected to be a super team again but it is still yet to happen. I’m jumping off them this week as they have dropped too many winnable games. I think the Swans have the man power to beat the Hawks with Barry Hall in good form and Adam Goodes directing traffic in the middle and bobbing up for a few goals.

West Coast V Geelong, Sunday at Subiaco Oval
Tip: Geelong

One can not got past Geelong. They are a strong fast unit that can with withstand any game plan thrown at them. The Eagles were disappointing last week and will be hapless against Geelong’s forward pressure. Geelong by 45 points.

Melbourne V Collingwood, Monday at the MCG
Tip: Collingwood

The Pies should be able to get a win here. Although Melbourne have shown some signs of success in recent weeks they fail to play a full four quarter game. This gives teams a period of time to dominate play to put the game out of reach. My prediction is that Collingwood will do the same and get a 30 point win on the board.
